We did nazi that zombie coming! In this week’s podcast, we close the Halloween celebration with two more movie reviews. First up we discuss the Gareth Evan’s directed “Apostle” available on Netflix. And also, we talk about the latest from Bad Robot Productions, “Overlord”, directed by Julius Avery. Tune in now and hear our thoughts on these films and more.
The Wicker Welsh
First up we have the latest offering from Gareth Evans, director of the spectacular “The Raid” and “The Raid 2”. “Apostle” set in the early 1900s, is about an ex-priest that must rescue his sister from a crazed cult. He travels to their island to infiltrate their ranks, but soon discovers a dark secret buried deep within their community. It’s a movie much in the style of films like “The Wicker Man” and a far cry from the director’s previous ultra-violent martial arts fare. Though not his first foray into the horror genre, this is a fascinating look at a filmmaker exploring other avenues in storytelling. Has Gareth Evans discovered a new lane in his career, or should he return to what’s familiar and give us a third “The Raid” entry?
Did Nazi That Zombie
From producer, JJ Abrams comes “Overlord” a polished B-Grade action/horror in the tradition of early grindhouse cinema. A team of paratroopers are dropped behind enemy lines with a critical mission to take out a communication tower. Things don’t go as planned when their plane gets taken down, and only a few survive the crash. With reduced numbers, they proceed with their orders to take out the target. They find refuge in a small town near the objective but overrun with Nazi soldiers. The plan proceeds but they uncover a secret lab beneath the German base. Therein lies experiments to develop a serum that could create an army of super soldiers.
