Welcome to oceans book club, where it’s all about women in film. We have ladies reevaluating relationships when introduced to “Fifty Shades of Grey”. And we have ladies stealing jewels from the Met Gala. And to balance it out, a whole lot of football talk with the ongoing World Cup. Listen now!
Fifty Shades of greying
First up is Eccentric Tom’s review on “Book Club”. The directorial debut of Bill Holderman, with a story written by Holderman and Erin Simms. The film stars Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen, and Mary Steenburgen, as four friends who read “Fifty Shades of Grey” as part of their monthly book club.
This becomes the catalyst to not only question their happiness, but also their views on personal relationships. With a cast of renowned screen sirens from various eras, does the film prove that age doesn’t matter when it comes to the box-office? Or is it just a case of blatant product placement targeting fans of the book?

And in our feature segment, we review the female-led spin-off to the “Oceans 11” trilogy. This time around we follow the exploits of Deborah Ocean, Danny Ocean’s sister played by Sandra Bullock. After her release from prison, she plans a heist to steal a multi-million dollar necklace from the Met Gala.
Joining her are Cate Blanchett, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Helena Bonham Carter, Rihanna, and Awkwafina as members of the crew. And playing the mark is Anne Hathaway as the insufferable and vapid celebrity Daphne Kluger.
In light of the all female-led Ghostbusters retread, will this also fall under the weight of the fan expectations? Or can Sandra and her team step out of the shadow left behind by George Clooney’s previous outings?
