Episode 64 – Glowing Sacred Deer

It’s our glowing of a sacred deer, or more accurately our second episode of the new year. And since we’re drowning in the non-existent rush of January releases, we set our sights to the previous year. This episode we bring up a television show and a film we feel needs a little more attention. We talk the Netflix series Glow and our pick for most depressing movie of 2017, The Killing of a Sacred Deer.

In this corner.

Entering the ring at a combined run-time of 10 episodes, and ozone-depleting levels of hairspray. From creators Liz Flahive, Carly Mensch and producer Jenji Kohan, who you might recognize from Orange is the New Black. Comes the Netflix series GLOW a.k.a ‘The Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling’.

Based somewhat on the 1980s syndicated show of the same name. We follow leads Ruth “Zoya the Destroya” Wilder and Debbie “Liberty Belle” Eagan, played by Alison Brie and Betty Gilpin respectively. Add a cast of assorted misfits led by show producer Sam Sylvia, and we have one of the most entertaining shows on Netflix.

And speaking of despair…

Yorgos Lanthimos follows up The Lobster with our vote for the most soul crushing film of the year.  The film follows surgeon  who secretly befriends a teenage boy with a connection to his past. But things take a turn for the worse, when the boy is introduce to the surgeon’s family.

With harrowing performances by Colin Farrell and especially Nicole Kidman, the film beautifully paints a picture of bleakness and desolation. We promise no spoilers in our review and we urge everyone to see this remarkable film.
