Haunted houses and castles, oh my! We keep the Halloween theme going with some Netflix and thrills. This week we check out ‘The Haunting of Hill House” based on the 1959 book of the same name. Also, we review the much anticipated second season of “Castlevania” based on the classic video game series.
The hills have houses
Keeping on with last week’s spirit of old hallows eve, we review the “Haunting of Hill House’. There have been several attempts at adapting the original book, with the most notable one being “The Haunting” back in 1963.
This new Netflix show sets out to stay faithful to the source while adding its unique take on the themes of the novel. Set in both the present day and the early nineties, we follow the Crain family at the aforementioned Hill House. Paranormal events force the family to flee, but the ghosts of the past manage to catch up with them.
Mike Flanagan who directed last years “Gerald’s Game”, crafts the series brilliantly. With fantastic imagery, family-drama and the obligatory peppering of jump scares, find out why this new series might rank among the best of the year.
Haunted Houses and Castles
And finally, it’s the eagerly awaited return of “Castlevania” with double the episodes in the second season. Alucard, Trevor and Sypha this time must quest for the Belmont library to find a way to destroy Dracula. However, the Vampire Lord has assembled his generals with plans on leading an all-out assault on humanity.
With an expanded cast of characters, there is some much-appreciated world building this time around. So with humanity now on the brink of extinction from a large scale vampire attack. It’s more Warren Ellis written anime inspired mayhem and we can’t wait to sink our fangs into one of the best video game adaptations ever.
