Tonya Harding lands the triple axle, the “Cloverfield” series gets a third entry and a woman makes love to a man-fish. Welcome to a special, wet and wild, all movie review episode with your friends at the last king podcast. We talk the new JJ Abrans produced film that dropped on the day of the Superbowl 2018. And in our main segment we have a double feature of “I Tonya” and “The Shape of Water’.
There’s another Cloverfield?
So gimmicky marketing aside, it’s a cool idea to announce a film’s release the same day as the trailer drop. We’re talking of course about Bad Robot production’s “Cloverfield; Paradox”, a film nobody saw coming or even wanted.
Now we know this was a re-purposed movie with the JJ Abrams brand slapped on, either to ensure viewers or quite possibly being released at all. But with that in mind we do our best to make a fair assessment of a film that pales in comparison to the other films it references. All that in the opening ramble.
In this corner…
In the first half of our double feature we review Gullermo Del Toro’s “The Shape of Water“. A modern fairy tale starring Sally Hawkins in her Oscar nominated role as a mute lab-worker who finds love… with a man-fish?
While the unusual plot is enough to compel, the main highlight is Del Toro’s signature style and attention to detail. A film that can be visually stunning and equal times horrific, find out what made us gush out the gills about this peculiar fish out of water love story.

And the challenger…
Margot Robie leads an amazing cast, in possibly one of the best biopics to be released in the last few years. “I, Tonya” finally gets released here in Singapore, and quite frankly was well worth the wait.
Even if you are not a fan of the sport (or have no clue who Tonya Harding is), we urge all our fans to go see this for performances alone. Listen now and find out why we feel this is the obvious winner for Best Actress at the Acadeny Awards.
